The Maasai Mara game sanctuary is arguably Kenya's most popular game reserve. It is the most popular and most visited game park in Kenya.
Nearly all varieties of wildlife can be viewed at the Mara. The reserve abounds with animals with about 452 varieties recorded here. Hot air balloon safaris are offered in this sanctuary.
The Masai's who inhabit the Mara and its ecosystem are strongly independent people who still value custom and ritual as a vital part of their everyday lives. They perceive themselves not just as occupants of this area but that they are so much a part of the life of the land as the land is a part of their lives.
Traditionally, the Masai scarcely hunt and dwelling alongside animals in tranquility is a significant part of their beliefs. Lions and Wildebeest have an important role in their cultural beliefs as their own herds of livestock. This distinctive co-existence of man and wildlife makes this Masai land one of the world's most extraordinary wilderness regions.
On a yearly basis the Mara hosts the world's greatest natural show, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life supporting grass in the north brings in more than 1.3 million Wildebeest in tandem into a single mammoth herd. They pour over the border into the Mara, making a spectacular entry in a surging column of life that stretches beyond the horizon.
At the Mara River they mass as a group on the banks before finally plunging forwards into the fierce waters, creating frenzy as they wrestle against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not merely through their cycle of renewal of the grasslands, but for the predators that pursue the herds.
The Masai Mara has been referred to as the Domain of Lions and these regal and proficient hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and minor predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is a terrific natural wonder, one place where Masai herdsmen share the plains with hunting lions, an area of mighty herds and constant cycles of life, death and regeneration.
Wildlife moves freely in and out of the sanctuary and throughout neighboring Masai lands. Outside the limits of the sanctuary, are many small camp sites and lodges, some of which have walking, horse riding and other safari options.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman escarpment, both thought of as sacred to the Masai, offer high forest hiking options for the fun traveller.
How to get there:
Road entry to Masai Mara is through Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may choose to fly to the Mara, which is served by 4 man airstrips. Daily regular flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are available. Exclusive Charters also use these airstrips. Getting to the Mara area is tricky without private transport.
Masai Mara Safari:
Most guest visitors visit Masai Mara as part of a safari package from Nairobi or in a hired car. The reserve has well established inner roads and tracks. Getting to areas outside the park is only possible using ordinary public transport, and finding your way around can be complex.
