Acer Inc., no slouch when it comes to contending in the laptop space, have announced their plans to enter the ebook book reader arena later this year.

Acer executive Jim Wong, head of the company's IT Products section, outlined the strategy during an interview with Bloomberg at Acer's HQ in Taipei.

On the eve of Apple's purported entry into the tablet sweeps-a gadget that would serve e-book readers plus others-Wong also said the company will additionally offer "hundreds" of apps online, programs which will support Google's Android platform, at present running on several Acer products, on top of handling Microsoft's Windows OS.

By July, Acer will be expected to make available an e-book reader with a 6-inch monochrome screen, Mr. Wong informed Bloomberg. "Amazon.co.uk and Barnes & Noble; they are American. In Western Europe and Asia-Pacific we have publishers to work with, and most of them are content owners," he said. Acer would go up in opposition to gadgets including the Amazon Kindle , B&N Inc.'s Nook and Sony's Reader and so it will be easy to compare ebook reader models.

Acer also has the Apple "iSlate"-if it emerges-in its sights. "We're developing something, and we shall observe what happens" J.T. Wang, Acer's president, said in the report. "We're certain to work either within a Windows world or in Google's distinct OS space."
