The phrase political left is sometimes applied to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Traditionally a liberal was somebody who believed in the human rights of the individual. They wished to reduce the impact of the Church or non secular groups without defying the conventions of the Constitution. They were usually linked to being the patriots of freedom and would seem, on paper at the least, to be extra tolerant and more generous.
The political right on the other hand could be used to describe somebody who was more conservative in their outlook on life. In case a hostile situation arose within the Middle East for example, whereas the political left would be willing to work with the United Nations and make an effort to attain a peaceful compromise, the right would typically advocate an armed response especially if they believed the USA was at risk.
The political right was often associated with being American patriots.
Historically, the Republicans would have been seen to assist the army and its veterans, although it is debatable if that is still the case. They believed in an entrepreneurial spirit, after all this is the USA where anybody could become rich if they believe in their dreams. With the recent economic recession, there are lots of people who believe that those on the political right will likely support the capitalistic ideal at the expense of regular people's pensions and stock holdings.
Whether or not you see eye to eye or disagree with either party, it is more than clear that there are severe viewpoints on both sides. For example various conservatives believe that each person must be responsible for their own healthcare, schooling etc. After all if others can achieve something why can't everyone? They do not buy into the truth that some people simply are not cut out to be entrepreneurs.
