Beneath the envelop of the tent a ear splitting splash followed by loud grunts awoke me beckoning me to think it was daybreak! The hippos in a hurry to get to the pool must have run at bursting swiftness to enter the water just before sunrise above the azure skies.
Still dazed and not feeling like climbing out of the warm bed, I gaze outside the tent, it was still dim and the hippos were grumbling so close by. I opened the tent and in the flashlight, round eyes spaced apart looked back at me out of the dark.
This is only 4am and the hippo pod was alive. Whatever changed about the concept that hippos graze out throughout the night - this is certainly a Tsavo safari.
The pool dazzled beneath the reflection of a clear star spotted heaven. Now, wide awake, I explore the pond for more life and several meters from the grunting hippos, relaxing in the edge of the pond is a crocodile. I cannot return to sleep now with plenty happening beneath my veranda.
It is apparent now to discover how Finch Hatton, the famed fan of Karen Blixen and author of 'Out of Africa' could be so charmed with Tsavo that his cite '"Tell them I'll be in Tsavo", has transformed the beautiful elegant tented camp in the center of Tsavo West park to a hallmark of reputation around East African safaris circuits.
Designed around innate pools filled with waters coming from the Chyulu Hills and the dazzling Kilimanjaro, it's heartening to trek the camp environs. You just cannot ignore this walk!
Just after a nutritious morning gourmet, an aid follows us for the stroll highlighting the bird's species plus the crocodiles. Observing the hippos open their gigantic mouths revealing pink yellow-colored enamel you would not want to get near. Hippos are effective killers if it's a choice between his territory and the intruder.
A Greyish crowned heron on a hippo's flip side gives a sigh of satisfaction as the hippo plods across the shallow pond. Tiny footed African jacanas perch on the suspended leaves of the water lilies and a terrific white egret stands by the shores studying us.
Upon the veranda of a shelter, two colorful kingfishers dive inside the pools as the flowered Malachite and grey headed kingfishers on the bushes look on as 2 young alligators bask in the sun adjacent the tent.
"This is actually an entire ecosystem" notes the guide. "There are zero fences thus the animals have right of way." "During drought, elephants, giraffes, water bucks roam here when water is lacking elsewhere".
It's unbelievable that the trek covering the grounds has lasted through morning meal to lunchtime. A spotted monitor lizard scampers ahead of our route while it disappears into the dense shrub. Soon we get to the crocodile nursery at the pool where the spring water bubbles.
A petite crocodile lies about the exposed stone oblivious of our presence. The crystal clear pool of bubbling water is extremely bustling with the young charges. We admire how this little one shall later grow into a monstrous sized crocodile. What a morning!
