For a start, the major manufacturers of clone golf clubs are true golf companies in their own rights. Their own research and development departments produce club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. The rules of golf lay down strict limits when it comes to club design. Club heads have to abide by these restrictions, otherwise they are deemed non-conforming and prohibited for use in competitive play. That's not only at the top levels of the game. Bagging a non-conforming driver in your monthly medal could well get you disqualified.

Take a driver for example. For a driver to be conforming, it has to have a volume of 460 cc maximum. It's not enough for a producer to say their drivers are no bigger than 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to confirm they aren't. If drivers do come in under the limit, they are listed on the Conforming Driver lists. If they fail the test, they go on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.

Quick note here. Some suppliers of inferior knock-offs proudly proclaim their drivers are conforming by stating their clubs are not on the non-conforming lists. All that means is that they haven't submitted their clubs for testing. Conforming drivers go on the conforming list. If a club isn't on the non-conforming list, that doesn't make it conforming.

Creating conforming clubs takes a lot of attention and a lot of manufacturing skill. The limits placed by the rules are very strict and it only takes a tiny manufacturing discrepancy to end up with non-conforming clubs. Dimension isn't the only design element limited by the rules. With restrictions on club-face spring back for instance (the Coefficient of Restitution) potentially influenced by even a tiny deviation in the thickness of the face, quality control is vital.

Golf clones from the main companies conform to the rules of the game and will make a much smaller dent in your wallet. Using the same quality materials as the big OEM's and with the same (or better) shafts, these are premium golf clubs that will make your golf that much more satisfying. As a bonus, many of the top companies offer custom build options on their clubs.

What you end up playing is a set of excellent, conforming, custom built clubs that will perform as good as, and usually a whole lot better, than those expensive off-the-rack OEM's. What you won't get is the price tag.
